22556VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks & Emergencies in the Workplace

Overview

This asthma first aid course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to enable providing assistance to a person having an asthma attack and administering either the patient’s own asthma bronchodilator medication or the organisation’s asthma first aid equipment.

Duration

  • 3 hours face to face training

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites.

Outcomes

On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment in 22556VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace, valid for 3 years.

Entry Requirements

Students under the age of 18 years will be required to provide a signed parental consent form prior to attending the course. This form can be accessed by clicking here.

Learner Support and Reasonable Adjustment

If you have a learning difficulty or any special needs or support requirements please contact us prior to enrolment. This may include but not limited to language, literacy and numeracy skills or disabilities. It’s important to note that there is a physical requirement to complete 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor with a manikin.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is available to those who can provide other evidence that they can demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and experience described by the unit. There is a currency requirement to be able to demonstrate skills such as CPR.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Every student requires a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to obtain a certificate or qualification from their registered training organisation when studying a nationally recognised training course in Australia.

A USI gives you access to an online account that keeps all your training records together, even if you move locations, change training organisations or undertake studies at different times in your life. For more information ask your training organisation or visit www.usi.gov.au.

Assessment (Theory) – Multiple choice question paper

Question paper detailing the knowledge from the course such as:

Composition and essential components of an Asthma Management Plan

Relevant workplace policies/procedures for the management of an asthma emergency

Guidelines of Asthma peak bodies

Risk management and minimisation strategies contextualised to the specific workplace environment

Environmental hazard identification and minimisation

Requirements in some workplaces for Police Checks and/or Working with Children Checks

State/Territory regulatory requirements for asthma management relevant to workplace contexts

Signs and symptoms of asthma – mild/moderate, severe and life-threatening

Potential consequences of an asthma episode

Common allergic and non-allergic asthma triggers

First aid principles and procedures for the emergency management of asthma; including individual Asthma Action Plans

Common asthma medication and equipment

Sources of medical assistance, such as: designated first aiders/first aid officers, general practitioners, ambulance

Workplace’s debriefing policies/procedures

State/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace requirements for refresher training to maintain currency of competence

Assessment (Practical ) – Physical demonstrations

Physical demonstrations (skills)

The simulated assessment environments will reflect the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.  Skills must be demonstrated by the student working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess students’ skills and knowledge. It’s important that students have knowledge of the content of this course. The assessable practical skills are listed below.

You will be assessed on performing asthma scenario and task demonstrations to:

Recognise and treat asthma using a blue/grey reliever with and without a spacer

Report an asthma incident to relevant authorities and parent/carer

Conduct a risk assessment and make recommendations for controls to help manage asthma in the workplace
