Unconscious ChildApply DRSABCD.Call Ambulance 000.Gently turn the child into the recovery position being careful to support the head and neck withno unnecessary twisting of the spine. If there are several helpers, the log roll technique(refer to page 59)should be used.Gently apply backward head tilt with chin lift to open the airway. f there is a discharge from the ear, position the child with the affected side downward with a Iclean pad underneath the affected ear.Do not plug the ear because this could cause pressure to build up and damage the brain. Allowthe watery fluid to drain freely (it should only slowly trickle) onto the pad(refer to Bleeding from the Ear, page 78) .Check and control any other bleeding.Apply secondary survey and closely monitor the child until Ambulance arrives. If the child regains consciousness: Reassure.Keep the child comfortable, rested and warm because uncooperative and irrational behaviourmay follow.Closely monitor patient for response, airway, normal breathing while waiting for Ambulance.Care of the airway takes precedence over any other injury (including neck and spinal injury)224 Common Illness and Ailments'
