b'Spinal Injury in WaterChapter hapterHow to ManageConscious PatientKeep the patient calm and still as possible.Call Ambulance 000.Gently support the patients head, neck andupper body to keep the airway clear of the water.Try to maintain alignment of the spine.Move or tow the patient gently and slowlywhile steadily maintaining spinal alignment and traction on the head and neck.Do not suddenly change movement or direction when towing the patient.Preferably remain in the water until Ambulance arrives. If there is a long delayuntil emergency services arrive, you will need at least five helpers to support and maintain correct stability and alignment of the patient when carefully removing from the water. Continue to closely monitor patient for response, airway, normal breathing while waiting for Ambulance.Unconscious PatientApply DRSABCD.Call Ambulance 000.Remove the patient from the water as gently as possible with minimal delay. Youwill need assistance from as many helpers as possible.If the patient is breathing, gently turn the patient into the recovery position toprotect the airway.
