b'Lymphatic SystemChapter hapterThis system consists of a vast network of capillaries, thin vessels, valves, ducts, nodes and organs that help protect, maintain the internal fluid environment of the entire body by producing, filtering and conveying lymph and by producing various blood cells.Structures include lymph, lymph vessels, lymph nodes and the spleen. Lymphatic fluid contains white cells that slowly flow through the bodytissues to help fight against infection.White cells attack bacteria and travel through the lymph vessels to the lymphnodes where the infectious bacteria arecollected and removed. Lymph fluid then returns into theblood stream.Lymph nodes are mainly found in the neck, armpits and groin. When an infection occurs, these lymph nodes become swollen. The spleen also contains lymph nodes. Lymphatic fluid moves very slowly andcirculates about 2.5 litres of fluid each day.By comparison, about 10,000 litres of fluidpasses through the circulatory system daily.A pressure immobilisation technique for a snake bite will slow or even stop the lymphatic circulation. This will reducethe travel or movement of venom enteringinto the general circulation. How Your Body Works 33'
