Gently turn the patient into the recovery position being careful to support the head and neck with no unnecessary twisting of the spine. If there are several helpers, the log roll technique (refer to page 59)should be used.Gently apply backward head tilt with chin lift to open the airway.If there is a discharge from the ear, position the patient with the affected side downward, with aclean pad underneath the affected ear.Do not plug the ear because this could cause pressure to build up and damage the brain. Allowthe watery fluid to drain freely (it should only slowly trickle) onto the pad. (Refer to Bleeding from the Ear, page 78) .Check and control any other bleeding.Apply secondary survey and closely monitor patient for response, airway, normal breathingwhile waiting for Ambulance.If patient regains consciousness:Reassure.Uncooperative and irrational behaviour may follow so keep the patient comfortable, rested andwarm.Closely monitor patient for response, airway, normal breathing while waiting for Ambulance.
